Age Related Macular Degeneration
Protect your central vision. Detect early. Treat early.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that affects people over 50, causing gradual loss of central vision. It occurs when the macula — the part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision — deteriorates over time.
At Eye Specialist Centre Kuching, we provide advanced diagnostic and treatment options to help preserve your vision and quality of life.
Types of AMD
Dry AMD (Most Common)
Caused by aging and thinning of macular tissues
Progresses slowly
Early detection is key
Wet AMD (More Severe)
Caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina
Can cause rapid and severe vision loss
Requires urgent treatment
Symptoms
Blurred or distorted central vision
Straight lines appearing wavy
Difficulty reading or recognizing faces
Dark or empty spots in the center of vision
If you notice any of these symptoms, book an eye screening immediately.
Possible vision changes associated with AMD using an Amsler grid
Our Treatment Approach
At ESC, treatment is tailored based on the stage and type of AMD:
Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Injections
Used for wet AMD to stop abnormal blood vessel growth and preserve vision. Performed in-clinic with minimal discomfort.
Nutritional Therapy
For dry AMD, lifestyle changes and supplements (such as AREDS2 formula) can help slow progression.
Advanced Imaging
We use Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA), Ultra-Wide Field Fundus Photography, Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) and Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICGA) to monitor AMD progression with precision.
Early Diagnosis = Better Outcomes
AMD doesn’t cause total blindness, but it can make daily tasks difficult. With early detection and appropriate care, vision can be preserved and managed effectively. If you're over 50 or noticing changes in your vision, don’t wait.
